Join the Southern Illinois Branch UNA-USA, the Carbondale Branch AAUW, and the SIU Model United Nations for a UN Day 2022 program. Nourishing Peace focuses on the intersection of food security and peace around the world. A scarcity of sufficient and nutritious food breeds unrest, and conflict is a threat to food supply chains with effects rippling out far beyond just that region or country. Such threats hinder the world from meeting sustainable development goal #2, Zero Hunger.

SIU Law Professor Cindy Buys was a visiting professor at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland during the spring of 2022. She will share some thoughts about teaching law in Poland during this time and the effects of the war in Ukraine that she observed while visiting there. A virtual program on Zoom sponsored by the Carbondale branch AAUW and hosted by the Carbondale Public Library.

189 countries have ratified the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The United States is not one of them. What is preventing the United States from joining this international treaty and guaranteeing women's rights at home and abroad? Join us for a discussion with Dr. Lisa Baldez, Professor of Government at Dartmouth and author of Defying Convention: U.S. Resistance to the U.N. Treaty on Women's Rights to learn more about this history of CEDAW, why the United States has not ratified it, and what ratification might mean for the United States. This event is brought to you by the United Nations Association of Southern Illinois Chapter and hosted virtually by the Carbondale Public Library.

Join the UNA-USA Southern Illinois Chapter for their Annual Meeting and Program. The annual business meeting and election of officers will take place from 4-4:30pm. This will be followed by a panel discussion titled 'The UN and Afghanistan: Connecting Global Roads to Local Goals.' The panel will include Cindy Buys, SIU professor of Law, Cheryl Barnett, a U.S. veteran who served in Afghanistan, Charles Ruffner, SIU professor working on Agriculture projects in Afghanistan, and SIU Afghan students. This meeting is free and open to the public.

Join us to learn more about the Afghan refugee situation and what Carbondale organizations are doing to help. Panelists include Cheryl Barnett, Shawkat Muslimwal, Ashley Sogge, Cindy Buys, and Gary Williams. Panelists will be speaking about serving in the military in Afghanistan, the conditions of Afghanistan from the perspective of a member of the Afghan community, the work of Taskforce Pineapple, legal work that is happening to assist those trying to bring family to the US, the City of Carbondale's work with CAIRS, and the experience of being a refugee in the United States (specifically in Carbondale). This event is sponsored by Carbondale Area Interfaith Refugee Support (CAIRS), Southern Illinois Immigrant Rights Project (SIIRP), the United Nations Association of SI, and the Carbondale Public Library.

The UNA-USA Youth Observer to the UN elevates youth voices in the global policy dialogue around international issues. For a one-year term, and American between the ages of 18 and 25 is selected to engage and connect young people in the U.S. to the work of the UN.
